Regional projects have been developed to improve the efficiency of project implementation or to leverage the collective experience and resources of several Member States. Regional projects deliver assistance through technical cooperation beyond national borders and meet the needs of several Member States in a particular region. Such projects take into account national development goals but are programmed in accordance with the regional development priorities set out in the regional cooperation agreements, strategies and frameworks. Regional projects are divided into the following categories: transnational, regional, capacity building projects and joint activities with a regional or international entity.
Regional projects are created at the proposal of the IAEA or a group of countries, in response to the expressed common needs of several countries in the region, or at the proposal of the member states of the region that cooperate through regional co-operative agreements.
The IAEA member states are grouped for administrative reasons, so regional technical assistance and cooperation projects take place in four regions: Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and Europe. The Republic of Serbia belongs to the region of Europe, which has a total of 32 member states.
Transnational projects address development challenges that span more than one country, but not necessarily all countries in one region.
Regional standard-setting projects provide a framework for equal participation by Member States at regional level. Projects may include the development of guidelines, curricula, teaching materials and best practice documentation.
Capacity-building projects of developing countries support applicants from developing countries to participate in conferences, seminars and workshops approved under the IAEA Master Programs. This promotes networking and knowledge sharing.
Joint technical cooperation activities with a regional or international entity are formalized through cooperation agreements and are also considered as regional projects.
