Monitoring is continuous and systematic measurement and supervision of radionuclide content in the environment. Monitoring is conducted to determine the presence of radionuclides in the environment and to assess the level of public and environmental exposure to ionizing radiation during normal operations, in case of a suspicion of an accident, and during an accident. The relevant bylaw prescribes the type of samples to be taken, sampling location, number of samples, types and manner of systematic examination of environmental radioactivity so as to obtain basic information to evaluate radiation burden of the public, and basic information on the average level of radioactivity.
Legal entities authorized by Serbian Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security Directorate are responsible for gathering and analysing the samples. Based on the results obtained, the Directorate evaluates the circumstances, and, in case of elevated radioactivity, the Directorate prescribes urgent measures and evaluates the dose rate of environmental radiation received by the public.
