02 – 06 September 2019 – Interregional Meeting covering the topic of “Updating Safety Cases for Radioactive Waste Management” was held in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania.
Serbian representatives, together with other participants, used the opportunity to present their improvements and developments in safety cases for major radioactive waste processing and temporary and permanent storage facilities, mostly comprising disused sealed radiation sources. This was also an opportunity to exchange experience and lessons learned on the topic with other countries, and to obtain opinion on our Report on Safety Case for radioactive waste reprocessing facility in hangar H2.
Another purpose of the meeting was to give presentations on the content of the IAEA publications on Safety Standards providing fundamental principles of the safety case for facilities for temporary and permanent storage of radioactive waste such as GSG-3 “The Safety Case and Safety Assessment for the Predisposal Management of Radioactive Waste”, and SSG-23 “The Safety Case and Safety Assessment for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste”. The presentations on the IAEA Safety Standards were coupled with the examples of safety cases for the temporary storage in France and the permanent storage in England.
The meeting was a great opportunity to get a better insight into the international experience in this field.
