As before, Maja Gojkovic is the Head of Serbian delegation at the 68th Regular Session of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna which starts today and lasts until 20 September.
During this week, the delegates from 178 member states will have the opportunity to report on their work and achievements in the previous year. There will be discussions on a number of topics, the Annual report for 2023 and the budget for 2025, the activities in the field of nuclear science, technology and their applications, the IAEA activities in the field of nuclear security and the enhancement of the Agency safeguards. This year, special attention will be directed at nuclear security and safeguards in Ukraine, the Middle East and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
The overall of 25 side-events organized by the IAEA and 70 organized by its member states will focus on different aspects of the Agency’s work, ranging from the issue of plastic pollution in the Antarctic (through the NUTEC Plastic initiative) to how energy modelling can help the countries in achieving their net zero goals (through the Atoms4NetZero initiative).
The Scientific Forum on 17 and 18 September will look into the innovative ways of using nuclear and related technologies in the field of food and agriculture. This year’s topic is “Better Agriculture for Better Life”, which is related to the joint initiative by the IAEA and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization is aiming to assist the states in tackling world hunger and enhancing sustainable agrifood systems.
The new IAEA member states this year are the Cook Islands and the Federal Republic of Somalia.
The representatives of Serbian Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security Directorate (SRBATOM), together with the other members of the delegation of the Republic of Serbia, during the 68th GC will have meetings with the other states in the region with the aim of enhancing cooperation and exchange of information in the field of radiation and nuclear safety and security.
