At the invitation of the Government of the Republic of Srpska, Sladjan Velinov, Director of Serbian Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security Directorate, participated at the conference on climate changes under the name of “Climate Changes – Risks and Joint Action in the Region, 2023”, which was held today in Trebinje, Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).

The conference was opened by Bojan Vipotnik, Minister of Spatial Planning, Construction and Ecology in the Government of Republic of Srpska.

One of the panels in the conference was devoted to the issue of Trgovska Gora. Trgovska Gora is the location only a kilometer away from the border between the Republic of Croatia and BiH where the Government of Croatia is planning to construct a radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel disposal facility.

Bearing in mind the potential consequences, the eminent experts in this field from the entire region discussed the issues connected with the possible construction of the disposal facility, particularly from the perspective of its impact on the environment.

Following the panel, Director Velinov had an informal conversation with the Minister Vipotnik in which, among other things, he underlined the importance of close bilateral relations Serbia has with the Republic of Srpska. This was also an opportunity for them to exchange views and opinions on the activities and affairs related to Trgovska Gora, and the cooperation between the Republic of Serbia and Republic of Srpska.

One of the side events during the conference was the promotion of the monograph “Upravljanje prirodnim resursima u eri klimatskih promjena” (eng. “Management of natural resources in the times of climate changes”). The monograph was published by the Academy of Sciences and Arts of the Republic of Srpska and edited by the professors at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Banja Luka, Goran Trbic, PhD, Tatjana Popov, PhD and academician Dragoljub Mirjanic.
